BRISTOL — They’re gonna rock around the clock at this year’s 1950s-themed OM Show next weekend. “We’ve put together a great show,” said its director, Dan Checovetes. He said the show, which is two hours long plus a 15-minute intermission, will feature “a nice mix” of early rock and roll, doo-wop, Elvis Presley songs and some ballads. In addition, Checovetes said, there are three dance companies, “an excellent, excellent barbershop quartet and a Cambridge Park group that’s doing a number. The show, one the nation’s longest-running variety shows, started in Bristol 73 years ago and remains a spring staple in its hometown. It is the major fundraiser for the Older Members Association of the Bristol Boys and Girls Club and Family Center. In recent years, the show has been “counting down the decades,” its director said, and this time around the focus is on the 1950s. For the show, Checovetes said, he’s brought in a mix of old and new staff that includes people he’s worked with at the Warner Theater in Torrington and the Thomaston Opera House. The number of participants in the show is down from years past, with about 50 people on stage, including children. But talent levels remain high, organizers said, and the show itself won’t disappoint. For a section of Elvis songs, it’s using an arrangement done for a Broadway show a few years back that will deliver familiar music but with a little difference, Checovetes said. The cast held its last-ever rehearsal Tuesday in the OM room at the Laurel Street club, which is being replaced by an $11 million new headquarters for the Boys and Girls Club this year. The director said the rehearsal was “kind of nostalgic for the regulars,” but a look around at the worn-out room made it clear why a new building is needed for the club. This year’s show is being held at St. Paul Catholic High School on Stafford Avenue. Tickets are $20 for the 7:30 p.m. shows on both Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under for the matinee show at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. They may be purchased online at oldermembers.com/tickets.
