Local arts organizations go epic with ‘Les Misérables’ production Rich Lopez | jrlopez@mrt. Two major arts organizations team up again to bring the sweeping musical epic to the Wagner Noel on Thursday through Saturday. But this is more than another big Broadway show on that stage. Midland Community Theatre and the Midland-Odessa Symphony & Chorale work to prove this local production can compete with any of the touring shows that make their way to that facility. Pre-ticket sales already are proving that. “Friday and Saturday have sold well enough that we opened up our Thursday performance which was just going to be for our sponsors,” said Tim Jebsen, executive director of Midland Community Theatre. “Certainly the title will draw some, but I think the local connection offers some uniqueness that is attractive. “Les Misérables” isn’t the first collaboration between the two organizations. They’ve produced “Evita” and “Ragtime” at Midland College’s Chaparral Center. Both groups put the idea of another collaboration on hold as the efforts to produce were extensive. But the conversation resurfaced when the Wagner Noel was built. That could just be the home they were waiting for because so much is already provided for them. “The facility can provide front-of-house and ticket sales and some crew so it’s been a lot easier from before. We don’t have to provide the lights and the sound. We’re able to focus more on the show itself, which makes it a lot more enjoyable,” Jebsen said. The approach to this show has been meticulous. The leads were auditioned and cast nine months before full rehearsals so they could learn the music. The crew has been at work crafting the show, and the cast finally came together in the last two months. Rehearsals had to be separate but overlapping with MOSC’s LuAnn Lane providing musical accompaniment. MOSC Director Gregory Pysh has served as vocal coach while also readying the symphony. And all is going according to plan. “Rehearsals are right where they should be,” Pysh said. “We’re in the Redfern Room of the MCT for rehearsals so it really is very much a shared experience. No kidding. Not only are they working in the MCT venue, they perform in the MOSC’s home venue at the Wagner. The show symbolized more than just a production; the community truly is coming together for this. West Texans will be excited by the first-class production, Pysh said. And the grandness of the show cannot be ignored. “We have about 100 people producing this show who all live in the Permian Basin area,” Jebsen said. “I think that local connection has value here. Performing at the Wagner Noel could be akin to a child in a toy shop. The facility offers a larger space with bells and whistles not available at the MCT space. Jebsen is expecting to take full advantage of that. “It’s a different look and scope in a whole different facility,” Jebsen said. “So much is new and it gives us opportunities to do things we can’t do in our own space. We’ve rented huge drops and we’ll fly in chandeliers and bridges. “Les Misérables” was a monster hit on Broadway when it debuted in 1987 and ran through 2003. The show stands as one of the longest-running shows in history. Based on the Victor Hugo novel, the story focuses on Jean Valjean and his search for redemption from his time in jail for stealing bread. After breaking parole, police inspector Javert mercilessly tracks Valjean. Plainly, it’s epic — as is the production. Jebsen calls the preparations exhilarating. Pysh says this mini-run is all the more reason for people to go out to see. “With MCT shows, some people can just catch it the next weekend. And most people know MOSC shows are just the one. I think the cast will realize each performance is special and do their utmost to make it that way. These are our folks. And so I hope our community comes out to support,” he said. With all that’s in place and impressive ticket sales already, is it fair to assume the conversation for collaboration could continue? Neither of the men are opposed. “I think ‘Les Miz’ is going to be completely amazing and I’m excited to see and hear how the audience responds,” Jebsen said. “And hey, it is showbiz. You never know what’s going to happen. From a conversation that started almost three years ago, collaboration wouldn’t just be a win for the organizations but for Midland, Pysh said. “We work very well together and with the combo of the symphonic and the stage that both feature folks in our community is not just unique, but rises above the ordinary,” Pysh said. “I mean we’re pretty amazed by it now. “Les Misérables” at the Wagner Noel, 1310 N.
