Perez III, owner of Chambersburg Boost Moblie Exclusive store. «1»Editor's note: This is the third installment of Diverse Faces of Chambersburg, a continuing series on the different groups that make up our town. See the project at: http://laytonrobin5.wix. Chambersburg >> Born and raised in Trenton, N.J., Carlos H. Perez III was used to a different world before coming to Chambersburg. The owner of a Boost Mobile Exclusive store in downtown Chambersburg, he sees some similarities, but also sees more potential for community growth than what he experienced in New Jersey. In Trenton, he was raised in a mixed community. He considers himself "Guatarican-American" — a blend of his Guatemalan father and Puerto Rican mother. He started his first business when he was 20. After being a DJ for a while, he joined with Boost Mobile and had five stores open around New Jersey. However, with the economy changing, he ended up closing and selling some, leaving two open in 2011. Around that time, Hurricane Irene was heading his direction and his cousins, who had been through similar storms, suggested he leave the area. He took their advice. "We went to Harrisburg, there were no hotels," Perez said. "We kept on going on 76, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and I see Chambersburg. The name was familiar to him, as a neighborhood in Trenton was also called Chambersburg. Perez said the neighborhood was originally Italian that changed to a Latino neighborhood. "I saw one burg here, one burg over there, same burg, so let's try it out," Perez said. He stopped and stayed the night at La Quinta, and woke up thinking "it feels like home. From there, he picked up the chamber of commerce's booklet that said "a place where it makes you feel at home," and he thought "I loved it. That was enough for him to start researching the area. "I walked through downtown, I saw how clean it was, how quiet," Perez said. "People are cheerful. It was on a Sunday afternoon in the summer. It was a ghost town, but it was beautiful. Perez researched online and found resources that could help him as a business owner. "Where I come from, those things existed, but you didn't get the same results," Perez said. In Chambersburg, he was able to contact a superior at Boost Mobile and ask if there was a market for their store. It took months to get a response, but eventually they told him that they could open a store in Chambersburg and if he wanted it, he could take it. In 24 hours, Perez made the decision to pick up his life and move it to Chambersburg. He signed the lease on his store and his home in late 2012 and opened Boost Mobile downtown in January 2013. Now 32, Perez has been in Chambersburg just over a year and his view of the town has changed as he sees the reality of Chambersburg. While still a beautiful place, he does see a small percentage of the problems that he was seeing in Trenton. "I still see the same problems, the same attitude," Perez said "It's a lot less. Instead of dealing with 50 people that are a certain way, here I probably deal with five people. It's just, being from the city, I'm more aware of my surroundings. Other things he has noticed about Chambersburg is that it's an extremely diverse, family-oriented area. He called the people honest, and that while there are crimes that happen in town, they're not as severe as what he saw in New Jersey. The biggest thing he notices is that there is a big portion of the non-Latino community that wants to be of assistance to the Latino community, and is proactive about it. "They're more open, more welcoming," Perez said of the non-Latino community he has encountered. To Perez, the non-Latino community is welcoming enough, it's others that have to take the next step. "I think there really hasn't been that bridge between the American community and the non-American community," Perez said. "People wanna see change, the Americans, they wanna build a relationship with the Latino business owners and the Latino community and it really needs to be that the Latino community needs to come out of their shell. The diversity in the area is what really shocked Perez. He finds that many people stereotype the Latino community to be Mexicans, and while he agrees there is a large Mexican population here, he knows there is much more. To him, realizing that the second largest Latino population was Guatemalan was the biggest surprise. Perez said that he has learned so much about working with other Latino cultures from living in this area to assist him in working with the ever-growing Haitian population. He said that between the different Latino communities, they do work together and have created relationships between groups. But still, they have not made much effort to breach past the Latino community. "You could say it's a certain level of intimidation. Even myself, I'm not a college graduate so when I do mingle, and I do go to mixers and I'm dealing with bankers and lawyers, and I'm like what do I have in common with these guys?" Perez said. "Yeah, we're a part of the Chamber of Commerce but, and the group as a whole, I don't fit in. Perez emphasized that once he started talking to people one-on-one, he was able to change some perceptions. "They say 'oh wow, he's a good guy, he's a smart guy,' but it just takes time," Perez said. "For that one individual that wants to become a part of the whole, you have to go out and get engaged and build rapport and let people know who you are. Perez only sees growth for the future of Chambersburg, believing that its location on I-81 will enable it to grow quickly and immensely. He takes action if he notices a problem in town. "There was a time where I had weekends where I was having three to four customers getting robbed, and I opened my mouth and I spoke to the Chambersburg Police Department, and eventually that trickled to the chief of police, and there's a change because now my customers aren't getting robbed," Perez said. "Here is a place where I can voice my opinions and an effect will happen. In Trenton, Perez believed that while people would call and somebody would listen, there was not enough resources or manpower in the city to enact a real change. It's things that like that keep Perez confident in Chambersburg's ability to incorporate the Latino community into the rest of the town, with some assistance of people like him. He wants to build both his business and the community, and believes the only way to do that is to get everyone on more equal ground. "I put it on the business owners," Perez said. "If there's a flier, okay, 'here's going to be free English classes,' and I have people, customers that can benefit from that, let me make sure it's my prerogative. Let me make sure my people know. At the end of the day, they're gonna be better off. Rep. Bill Shuster has $1.
