Iron could withstand fire which lead to a belief that it could ward off all evil spirits. The belief that a witch could never enter a house with a horseshoe over the door fuelled the reputation of the lucky horseshoe. Suspected witches who went to trial but were not burned at the stake, rather buried after death, had horseshoes nailed to their coffins. This prevented them returning to life or resurrecting once again as witches. For centuries, the good luck horseshoe is a story of good luck, fortune and lucky charms. It's believed that the power of good luck of the horseshoe could be traced to the story of a blacksmith named Dunstan and a man he thought to be The Devil. It has been said that a man came to Dunstan and asked him put horseshoes on his feet like hoofs. Dunstan assumed this man to be The Devil and proceeded to nail a horseshoe to the hoof. Observing that The Devil was in tremendous pain, Dunstan is said to have chained him, in agony, only releasing him after he promised never to enter a place that had a horseshoe hung over the door. This established the horseshoe as powerful good luck charms. Dunstan later became the Archbishop of Canterbury (959 AD) and is now known as Saint Dunstan. How a horseshoe is hung and displayed above a door, on a wall or as decoration varies. In some parts of the world it is believed that hanging the horseshoe upwards - U - holds the good luck power that it brings. In these parts of the World, hanging the horseshoe the opposite way and 'upside down' means that its powers would fall away and drain away. Others believe that hanging it downwards allows the good luck, protective powers and fortune to 'shower' down upon you and engulf the dwelling. If you are extra superstitious, you may decide to hang one in each position. Looking back centuries from the present day, people still wear horseshoe lucky charms, amulets and give horseshoes as unique gifts to attract good luck. Horseshoes were originally secured to the horse using seven iron nails because seven has always been considered a very lucky number. Many horseshoes and charms are made with seven nail holes and presented at special occasions as good luck gifts. It is also believed that hanging a horseshoe over the bed helps to prevent nightmares. A common practice involves hanging a horseshoe outside a dwelling, barn or store to ward off evil and attract good luck. Sailors also treasure the horseshoe, nailing them to the foremasts of ships to ward off evil spirits and entities from harming their crew, ship or from preventing them from arriving at their destination safely.
